Hi friends,
How’s the week unfolding for you? These last two weeks I’ve worked four 12-hour shifts instead of my usual three and boy am I feeling it. I’m thankful for a supportive department and colleagues who insist on my rest to make up for it! I’ve now got some time off scheduled for the last week of October. Will I write? Take on a house project? Go for daily walks? Or will I simply sleep, eat, watch tv, and repeat? I will follow my energy when the time comes around and let you know where I end up. How do you like to spend your time off when you stay at home?
In August when we moved into the house we bought, I was determined to bring along as many plants as I could from our rental patio space. I spent the better part of a week bagging up dirt, putting plants in pots, and building travel trellises in order to give them all their best shot. I took one last grateful look at the sunflowers and zinnias; they had bloomed and would not be transferred. All in all, we managed to move six tomato plants, four pepper plants, two okra plants, and an assortment of perennial flowers.
Part of me wanted to just leave it all behind. Such work to pack it up. But none of it had produced any fruit yet and I really wanted to try those black cherry tomatoes! I googled a lot to see if they would even survive, and several blogs suggested they would but not without transplant shock. However, with the right care they probably would bounce back and provide at least a little bit of harvest.
We moved during a 90-100 degree week and by the time the plants were situated on our new patio I could not be bothered to give them said care. Blame it on my emotions or my physical state or a mix of the two, but I didn’t make much of an effort to help them establish in their new home. But occasionally when they were looking near their death I went outside and gave them some water. The bare minimum needed for survival.
